In this video I’m gonna be going into the next 3 Income streams in the music business .

Please note that with all these income streams I have either personally experienced and benefited from them or I personally know other professionals who have made a living by leveraging their talent through these streams.

This is the way to do it right . Do it right from the start. Don’t wait until you’ve been in the industry for 10 years before you”figure” it out .

In the previous article (PART 1) called “Make More Money From Music Business Through Multiple Income Streams” I spoke about the first three income streams

These first 3 income streams have all been part of the overall picture that has helped me financially to get where I am today.

In this 2nd part of the series I go into another 4 streams of income that I personally have used or I know friends in the music business who have used them to make more money from their skills & talents in music .

You must remember what I said . You will never really reach your full potential from just one of these streams . Its the combination of many of them tweaked to perfection that will get you to the place that you wanna go.

There are a lot of opportunities out there and its up to you to go out and take your share of them. Stop and think about some of these and come up with a plan about how you can make it happen . Have a vision and then take some action !!

Now its time for me to go back to eating too much food and cake as we celebrate Christmas in our home . God Bless and have a Merry Christmas from the Campos family !!

Afterwards I went to a music manager who asked me all these questions about publishing , masters , management and contracts . I didn’t have the faintest clue what she was talking about . That’s when she sat me down and drew me a picture with me or the artist in the middle with all these income streams surrounding us and feeding into us and into each other . This is when the proverbial “light bulb” switched on …

I later went on to become very successful in music business selling more than 1.5 million records and counting BUT the real wealth has actually come from some unexpected sources . Just as that manager taught me that day I went on to maximize my revenue streams and leverage my music to make the money from as many income streams as possible .

There were some people asking if I fell off the face of the earth or just plain died . I am perfectly alive and Kicking (some HOT beats) . Not only am I alive but I have some real exciting things in the pipeline which will be revealed in the coming months .

I have some really good news . Things are gonna be back to normal from now on because I have finally resettled in my new city and in my new recording studio . The same FREE videos you guys have come to know me for are gonna be rolling and MORE !!

I go into a lot more detail in this video I made which is the first of many more to come this year and the next .

In this video I explain how through my experience, that being good at producing and composing music is not enough. There are some social skills that you need to master in music business . One of the areas you need to master is the art of selling yourself and getting prospective clients to believe or buy into YOU !!

My Dad who was a very successful music producer taught me a very important lesson when I was a teenager apprenticing under him . I tell the story in this video .

I use reverse Reverb often especially to create a otherworldly effect with a dash of Drama or suspense !!

I use this effect on anything and everything. You can use it to bring in a chorus in a song instead of the old reverse cymbol trick (oops …I just gave away another reverse trick) . You can use it every second snare in a loop and trust me if you listen carefully to alot of music many people have done this before. You can use it as a sound effect for film or TV etc..

Its actually little tricks like this that make up the arsenal of a good producer . Surprisingly most people don’t know how to do the reverse reverb effect. There are plugins that try and emulate the effect but its just not the same. Its actually impossible.

In this video I reveal step by step how to do the reverse reverb effect. This trick was passed down to me by some old music gurus who taught me all these little secrets that I use today on my DAW. They used to do this with razors and sticky tape ….imagine that ??

As always , everything I teach can be applied to any DAW . look at the principles . If some old guys could do this with analogue tape and razors then you can do it on cubase or protools.

In this little video I show how to remove vocals using reverse phasing from a song. It doesn’t matter if  its an mp3 or wav . This technique will work for any stereo file BUT it must be stereo.

The basic formula behind this technique is

1 : First you invert the phase of one side of a song e.g. the right channel

2 : Then you mono the normal left channel and the inverted right channel .

What happens is anything that is mono in the original track will disappear.

Usually the Kik , Snare , lead vocals & bass are mixed in mono in most songs , So this means that the Kik , Snare , lead vocals & bass will disappear.

Basically whatever is panned or has a stereo effect on it will stay behind .

for e.g. Backing vocals , keyboards , panned guitars , reverbs etc..

There are a few benefits to this little secret .

1 : I often use this technique to study other peoples music . By eliminating instruments I can hear instruments that are usually hidden in the mix , I can also usually hear the chords of the song more clearly to decipher whats going on.

2 : The main reason why most people use this trick is to remove vocals from a song.

3 : Finally another very good benefit is the ability to sample sounds hidden deep in the track that nobody would suspect is possible to have access to. BUT …I advise you to seriously be careful with sampling other people’s music . You can get sued if your not careful .

This video is actually a follow on from our first video on recording guitar through a vintage amp. A few people asked me to explain how using my guitar and voice recording software I managed to get the right vintage sound on the vocals and guitars. So here it is .

Vintage Spring and Plate Reverbs were difficult to maintain and they were noisy ….BUT not anymore.

These days using standard Audio and Voice Recording software we can achieve the same lush sound with Virtual Spring and plate reverbs without all the maintenance and headaches . Using Logic Studio or any DAW for that matter , It is possible to get a great sound these days on your voice or guitar using standard Recording software.

In this video I show how I use a virtual Spring Reverb on both Voice and Guitar to get that elusive old Motown sound .

Why not experiment with vintage Reverb on modern music ? Just because Spring reverbs and Plate reverbs come from the old days doesnt mean you cant use it in music now successfully . Sometimes the older analogue sounds are easier on the ear than totally digital sounding music. What about Amy Winehouse’s music. There are many old skool elements in her music but with a fresh modern feel to it. Infact there seems to be a resurgence of more soulful and warm music .

I often compose jingles or music to picture for advertising companies.  I was commissioned the other day to compose a jingle for a new advertisement for TV . The briefing was to come up with something that has a Motown feel to it , something that sounds kinda RnB from the late 50s or 60s . So after I programmed the drums and Bass guitar on my audio recorder software it was time to lay down a little guitar.

Recording guitar is an area where you cant get away with fake sequenced guitar. especially for this style . So I called in a professional session guitarist by the name of Antonio Orrico . He is a real pro. Most of the time he does everything first time in one take in like 5 minutes and then we talk about music for 2 hours while we drink cappuccino . Once we had finished recording the guitar it was time for some vocals. So I hired another true professional by the name of Lungelo . He is a very talented artist with a great soulful voice which is perfect for my pseudo Motown track . Lungelo did a wonderful job on the vocals. He even did his own harmonies and backing vocals .

I have grown up in recording studios and around musicians my whole life. My father was a very successful session musician who later became a well known music producer. He was from the old school of electronic gear and analogue tape BUT I was the new generation and I loved computers and computer music. With home recording software packages becoming common, the costs of setting up our own home recording studio became reasonable and the whole idea became alot more feasible.

We eventually built a fully fledged recording studio at my dads home using home recording software and we never looked back. When I was 21 , I decided to leave my Dad’s business to start my own music production career and I immediately set up my own home studio. that was 15 years ago.

1st Home Recording Software Studio

This was my 1st studio . An Ensoniq EPS on a box in my apartment.  I couldn’t hear the mix properly because the sound was bouncing off the concrete walls and there were police sirens and car hooters coming from outside.

I used the built in sequencer on the ensoniq EPS to program my first songs on my own. The interface was a nightmare. fiddly little knobs and a tiny LED screen. BUT I worked hard and came up with excellent music. I managed to convince an ad agency to let me pitch for an UNO Fiat commercial against top music producers with multi million dollar studios. I actually won the job and got paid big time. I bought more gear with the money .

2nd Home Recording Software Studio

Here in my 2nd home recording studio which my brothers helped me build 2 years later we used dry wall to separate 1 room into a booth and a control room. 

We then soundproofed all the walls ,installed bass traps and double glass between the booth and us. You can also see that I bought a little more gear.

In those days virtual reverbs and compressors etc were not to the high standard of outboard gear like they are on home recording software packages or DAW’s (Digital Audio Workstations) of today. I recorded most of my productions on “Audio Logic” and some work on Cubase and fruity loops all on a PC with Windows XP.

3rd Home Recording Software Studio

This is the 3rd studio I built with my brothers about 3 years later. It took us 3 months.

In this studio we put a double sliding aluminium door between the booth and the control room.

In this studio It was the first time I managed to run my entire studio on virtual FX and instruments with no outboard gear and no analogue mixer. The results were astounding. First the quality of mixing internally digitally was instantly noticeable. Second the ease of saving all your reverb, compressor and instruments settings in the same session as the sequence was very practical and saved alot of time. Thirdly the cost had been brought down even more because all you were really splashing out on was the software and the plugins.

4th Home Recording Software Studio

This was my 4th studio I built 4 years later. Each time I built a home studio I improved it just a little bit. This time we literally built from scratch. I also did all the woodwork myself. It was a steep learning curve.

I changed from PC to Mac and I used Logic Studio and Pro Tools as my home recording software . In this studio I went 100% virtual including recording, sequencing, mixing and mastering. All on one machine .

I have now recently moved to a MacBook Pro laptop . I can compose full tracks anywhere, like my beach house on headphones at the pool or in bed . I can then plug in my laptop to my sound card in my proper studio later just to record vocals or do final mixing. People cant believe the results I’ve been getting.

It almost feels like I’m back where I started . just a simple setup BUT very powerful.

I have done it the hard way and I thought to myself that there has to be a better easier way. That is why I have pioneered a new method to build a recording studio fast and easy in few easy steps.
